The Enormous Yes

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

Follow-up to the previous post - when the old Foyles bookshop closed on the Charing Cross Rd, some wag did this to the sign. I really liked it - a bit like Yoko Ono's secret message that made John Lennon fall in love with her... There was a chance to say something positive and they took it!

On me your voice falls as they say love should,

Like an enormous yes.

Philip Larkin, 'For Sidney Bechet'

Until I read your words, I thought it was Spanish. Oyes: you hear or do you hear? It’s going to take me a while to get over the Larkin, if ever.

Here’s part of a poem for Sidney Bechet by Wynton Marsalis from Jazz ABZ. It goes for another two pages. The article about John and Yoko made me think of this postcard I saw while going through some yesterday: “Brotherhood/Sisterhood by Barbara Shinn. Hmm, why would I be going through postcards?...

Oh, it’s kebab, not gyro. That is a big yes to a falafel sandwich with lots of pickled turnips from me :)

Yes I like the bookshop sign too. I hadn't heard about how John and Yoko met.

I love the bit too about how he wanted to do the 'hammer and nail' challenge, but it was too soon, so she charged him five imaginary shillings to hammer in an imaginary nail! Quick thinking!
