Back to Ms Laura

Starting the prep again towards next Thursday's Livestream - Time & Love, Exploring Music by Laura Nyro, and more! By 1969, having written a string of songs that became big hits for other people, Laura was a shining star in the New York music scene/business. But the business wasn't what she was interested in. So already, by New York Tendaberry, her glorious third album (and probably my favourite), she was heading further and further away from the mainstream. According to her biography, there were few hooks or catchy choruses among the gems that made up New York Tendaberry. Laura Nyro was moving deeper and deeper into her own world of art and emotion, where she would be the only one brave enough to sing her songs. Brave or crazy, we'll attempt some next Thursday!

New York Tendaberry came out Sept 24th 1969. We can only imagine what people made of it. I'm sure for some (like me years later) it was like a thunderbolt, and their lives - at least their musical lives - would never be the same again...

Here's a little sequence of three around that title song...

Ah, I know - it's difficult to know which space to post in, isn't it, esp in response to the Over To Yous ;) So this is fine - I'll make sure Matti sees it (yes, brilliant version!). And I'll work on making the site a bit more user-friendly ;))

Billy, thanks for the primer on sweet blindness and for reminding me of anise. I’m taken back to Colombian aguardiente, in a cinnamon tea sweetened with panela—I think in the UK it’s better known as jaggery. I have no idea how to say it in US English. Even here, I’ve only bought it in Spanish :)

Maybe it’s like Cien años de soledad. The first 100 are the hardest.
