Bring On The Night 2

What is it about film noir? It's a style and a mood - the story can be secondary. It helps if the dialogue is snappy and the music cool. Classically filmed in that luminous black & white (though there are noirs in colour), neon reflecting on the wet pavements... It's like the dream has gone sour, but there's still beauty in it - and for some, that beauty in the shadows is more appealing than the bright beauty under the sun...

Anyway film noirs were a holiday treat for me - they used to be shown in seasons late at night on BBC2 over Christmas. What a secret discovery after all the rest of the house had gone to bed... Later on, I picked up this excellent boxset of noir titles, no weak links amongst them... It's incredible that most of these films are 70-80 years old now.

The influence is still there - in newer films, and in music that I love. Visiting LA a couple of years ago brought them to life again.

So, grab that long coat, turn up the collar, pull down the brim of your hat - see you on the corner at half past midnight...

and wow or should I say "Yeah Baby" (thats what Fred McMurray said constantly in the movie or so it seemed to me many years ago) for the Glendale story.

Amanda it looks good. Black beans in the brownies. Is the liquid instead of egg? Something to get the kids to cook over Christmas. I'm sure they wont last long !!

Exactly, the canned bean liquid works like egg whites. Some people can even magic it into meringue. Not me, other people. The first bite, I wasn’t sure, then all the bites after that made me think I’ll never use a different recipe.
