So many people have covered Laura's songs - but most often it's the same handful of songs from the first two or three albums. By the time of album three (New York Tendaberry) the songs are becoming so personal and unique, most cover-artists don't dare approach them. So it's nice to find this version of American Dove. Rumer + a Laura Nyro ballad seems like a perfect combination
Meanwhile, I was so excited last night to find out more about Laura's aunt, the artist Theresa Bernstein. What a wonderful woman, who lived to be almost 112! Whilst not wanting to overplay things, the connections and similarities between them seem really telling! I'm really interested to see more of Theresa's paintings; she's another singular, bold and compassionate talent :)
I made a little gallery of photographs of Theresa here -
Her scrapbook containing these photos and others is free to view on this excellent website:
PS There are many other unexpected covers of Laura's songs to be found in the nooks and crannies of YouTube - for instance these two...

It’s a great cover, another song about love...I like ”talking in the street through the grapevine.” It’s recorded at the World Cafe in Philly. Did you know they have a nationwide public radio show too? https://www.npr.org/sections/world-cafe/ I love the old photos. I think she must have spanned tin plates to Polaroids! It’s nice to see more of her work than just the couple on Wikipedia. The retrospective while she was still alive must have been amazing!
Wow! So much to look at but it will have to wait till tomorrow...
The treat of the Rumer cover :)))
Theres so much art to look at! First glance at the sketches and there's one of Albert Einstein!
