Curator Creator - Laura Day 8

What an interesting mix of music today - carols and choral arrangements this morning with the University of the Third Age choir, then a street-activist celebration of protest with some of the Voices of Freedom singers in the market square later - and who knows what else before the day is out? It's so much fun being eclectic! And popping into a favourite cafe between engagements - what a pleasure! This is The Curator, the best cafe at the bottom of town and scene of my old EFL teaching (for some reason, it's often extremely quiet upstairs there).

So, while there's a minute, here's today's Laura entry - Day 8! Christmas is coming!

It's a clip from the infamous Monterey Pop Festival appearance in 1969, where the story goes that Laura lost confidence in performing live. It still seems like a brilliant performance! She's up there, age 19, in front of a tricky festival crowd, offering emotional, confessional songs. It's a really tall order. What's more, she's been put on without her piano (she ALWAYS has her piano!), and the band - top session players though they are - haven't rehearsed with her (you can see her asking them to slow down near the beginning). Apparently there is some booing. People don't realise how destructive such negative responses can be (it's the same nowadays with the comments section on YouTube etc!). Anyway, from the video, it seems there's a lot of positive response from the crowd too. Power to you, Laura...

What a beautiful day of music! Handy catered classroom. We played Where's Phil? Myles thought that was just a stray shoe because he sees you in the sign--the one confirming there are a lot of Japanese people in Totnes! Is that the house special? It's lunchtime here. That looks good. I gotta go find ciabatta. I only hear applause for Laura's song. She must have felt pretty naked without her piano, but she still does it beautifully. You talk about being brave. You are. Power to you, Phil...
